“Man is the pie that bakes and eats itself, and the recipe is separation.”
The title is a quotation from Lanark by Alasdair Gray.
I have spent much of my day rereading my notes in Hopscotch by Julio Cortazar, and I’m not sure why the quotation from Lanark seems appropriate. I have also been copying some of my notes out of Hopscotch into a notebook, and I’m still not sure why the quotation from Lanark seems appropriate. I have also read Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” at least three times today, and now maybe I have a glimmer of an idea as to why the quotation from Lanark seems appropriate.
I followed the recipe very carefully, and I’ve been eating at myself all day–using Eliot’s canines and incisors and Cortazar’s molars.
1 commentyes by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin
On Sunday (the day before yesterday), I shaved my face and head for the last time this semester. On, or shortly before May 11, I will do some math and figure out which of my students has the highest grade I will put into a hat the names of all the students who have an 87% or better in my class, pull one student’s name out of that hat, and then give that student design rights on my head. Over the following weekend, I will fashion my hair however that student prescribes (within reason–dirty words across the back of my head and Hitler moustaches are right out) in terms of shaving, cut, and possibly color, and then wear my hair like that for the next full week before returning to my normal, shaved self.
And unless I indulge in further, overly-long hiatusses, I imagine I’ll post hirsute updates here. Also, I expect a return to the quiz this week.
Stay tuned.
